Cardiac coherence makes learning easier and teaching safer.
Our
educational systems focus on improving children’s cognitive
skills from the moment they enter the kindergarten classroom.
However, virtually no emphasis is placed on educating children
in the management of the inner conflict and unbalanced emotions
they experience each school day.
As new concepts such as emotional intelligence become more widely
applied and understood, more educators are realizing that cognitive
ability is not the sole or necessarily the most critical determinant
of success in today’s society.
Cardiac Coherence-Inducing Techniques
in Education
Cardiac
coherence is a state associated with:
Clear
thinking
Effortless
focusing
Enhanced
creativity
Improved
learning capacity
Improved
problem solving abilities
Emotional
stability and good mood
Easy decision-making
Increased
ability to communicate
Behaviors
driven by higher emotions, (compassion, respect, gratitude
and joy)
Heart-Smiling is a simple cardiac coherence inducing
technique that transforms a person’s emotions into a calm,
focused and engaged state of mind conducive to easier learning
and more appropriate behaviors.
Heart-Smiling is an easy to teach technique that
can be demonstrated in the classroom. When working one-on-one,
use available biofeedback software, which provides students with
immediate feedback on their mastery of the technique.
Research studies:
Middle School students in Florida and High School seniors in Minnesota
were trained in cardiac coherence-inducing techniques. As a result,
they improved their intellectual and emotional management skills.
These studies demonstrate that when physiological coherence is
increased through heart-brain synchronization, students better
manage mental and emotional turmoil, thereby, fostering greater
mental clarity and expanding mental capacity.
Besides
improving grades, these young people improved skills in three
main areas:
1. Personal attitudes: Students developed better attitudes
at school, had more self-confidence, increased self-reliance,
feelings of self-satisfaction, were more assertive, controlled
their emotions better and got more proficient at managing stressful
situations.
2. Interpersonal skills: Students became more outgoing
and empathetic, nicer to classmates and better at anger management.
Peer support increased and students participated more and obeyed
better.
3. Achievement aptitude: Students became better motivated
and more energetic, better focused, better at managing their work
and developed better leadership skills.
These results and changes in attitudes were observed at school
and at home also. With more easily manageable students, teachers’
comfort levels also improved. Schools, home and community all
benefited from the practice of these techniques.
Heart-Smiling
training seminars for teachers and adult students are available
in the USA and in Canada.
